The short version: This is a personal site about a boat and the people aboard it. We don’t run ads, we don’t use analytics or tracking pixels, and we never sell or rent your information to anyone.

The only personal information we ask for is your email address, and only if you choose to subscribe to the newsletter.

Who we are

This site, mvnorthstar.com, is run by Ken and Roberta Williams. It exists to share where our boat is and what we’re up to. It isn’t a shop and it isn’t a business.

The newsletter

If you sign up for email updates, you give us your email address. We use it for exactly one thing: sending you updates about the voyage.

Newsletter signups and delivery are handled by a third-party email service rather than stored on this website. That service processes your address on our behalf so it can deliver the messages and honour unsubscribes.

Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and it works immediately. You can also just reply and ask us to take you off the list. We will never sell, rent, trade, or hand your address to anyone for their own use.

If you email us

If you write to us, we’ll have whatever you put in that email, and we’ll keep the correspondence so we can reply and remember the conversation. That’s it.

What your browser shares automatically

Some information is sent by your browser to any site you visit, simply as part of how the web works. We want to be straightforward about it:

  • Server logs. Our web host keeps standard logs, which typically include your IP address, browser type, which pages were requested, and when. These are used for security and troubleshooting, not to build a profile of you.
  • The map. The tracker map is drawn using map images from OpenStreetMap and a mapping library loaded from a public code host. Photographs are served from a content delivery network. To send those files to you, those providers necessarily receive your IP address and basic request information. We don’t control their logs, and their own privacy policies apply.

Cookies

We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies. The site software may set a cookie if someone logs in to administer the site, which in practice means us and not you. There are no comment sections here, so there’s nothing that stores a comment identity.

About the boat’s position

The map on the homepage shows where our boat is. It’s our own position data, sent from equipment aboard North Star. It has nothing to do with your location, and nothing about where you are is collected, requested, or stored.

What we don’t do

  • No advertising, and no advertising networks.
  • No analytics or visitor-tracking scripts.
  • No social media tracking pixels.
  • No selling, renting, or sharing of personal information.
  • No attempt to identify individual visitors.

Your choices

You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in any email. If you’d like to know what we have about you, or want it deleted, just ask and we’ll take care of it. There’s no form to fill in and no hoops to jump through.

Children

This site isn’t directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If we change how any of this works, we’ll update this page and change the date at the top.

Say hello

We’re often out of cell range and running on satellite internet, so a reply may take a while — but Ken reads everything.
